All plastic we use in our unique products is 100% recycled.

About

About

At Soaring Supersaurus, we’ve been finding creative ways to give a second life to traditionally hard-to-recycle plastics at an accessible community level since 2021.

In Upper Rhondda Cynon Taf, we are uniting individuals, organisations, and local businesses to tackle plastic pollution. By pioneering a circular economy that keeps plastic in use, we are spearheading a Rhondda Recycling Revolution.

Our collection hub scheme empowers people to take action themselves. Anyone can conveniently drop off their end-of-life plastics at our hubs. This undervalued resource is then recycled into new, innovative products. Furthermore, our recycling workshops engage local communities and share valuable insights about the recycling process.

Through our inclusive art workshops, we inspire participants to redefine their perspective on plastic waste and its potential uses. Art can connect us through creativity, breaking down barriers and evolving our worldview.

Our valued partnerships with local businesses provide an opportunity to see their plastic waste transformed into new, useful products, diverting plastic from landfill.

We collect plastic waste from our partnered organisations, local businesses and community collection hubs where individuals can donate their plastic.

We then sort the plastic by colour and type, clean it and shred it using our shredding machine. This process reduces the plastic into small flakes that can be repurposed as a raw material.

We employ a variety of techniques to transform shredded plastic into new products. For our more complex designs, we utilise injection molding, 3D printing, or CNC machining. Additionally, our hot plate machines allow us to produce large plastic sheets, from which we can stamp out desired shapes using metal cookie cutters.

Our products are sold online and in local shops in South Wales with all profits going back into art and sustainability activities in our community.

Meet the Team

Paul Evans

Artistic Director

Paul runs the day-to-day of the organisation in the office with admin, funding applications and CNC art designing as well as being a director, choreographer and mixed art maker. Paul likes to work on the 'big stuff' like homeware and furniture in the workshop as well as the smaller jewellery pieces. The fortnightly collections from our partnered businesses, organisations, schools and collection hubs across Upper Rhondda Cynon Taf and Nantymoel are also run by Paul.

Currently watching: Star Trek: Lower Decks and Bridgerton.

Favourite Sandwich: Peanut butter. Classic, cool.

Lucy Purrington

Assistant

When she's not 'therapy shredding', you can find Lucy 'therapy sorting' the thousands of plastic bottle tops we receive every fortnight - both activities are "very relaxing". Lucy also makes jewellery pieces and manages the Soaring Supersaurus social media accounts and website.

Currently watching: Star Trek: Voyager, True Blood and Bridgerton.

Favourite sandwich: "Best sandwich ever" is apparently a 'Vegan Falafel Roll' from Crwst in Aberteifi. But a crisp sarnie will suffice.

Soaring Supersaurus began in 2014 as a circus-theatre company called Flying Diplodocus, with the aim of creating work that explored societal issues and choreographed circus performances relevant to those concerns. Over time, we realised this initial focus was not enough, and we expanded the scope of our work.

Soaring Supersaurus is the evolution of this expanded vision. It is an arts and sustainability company based in a community where plastic is recycled for both environmental and financial stability. From this foundation, Soaring Supersaurus uses its profits to provide arts and sustainability activities for the local community,  while also creating work that addresses broader societal needs.

The company's base in Penrhys, at the former Buffs social club, will be developed over the next few years into a centre for arts, sustainability, research, and, most importantly, community engagement.

In 2023, we engaged the community through planting parties to help establish our edible community garden and wildflower meadow.
